Thompson Charles
On the death of his father, Charles Thompson inherited a large fortune and decided to travel. In the first chapter of the first volume of the work devoted to his journeys (The Travels of the Late Charles Thompson, Esq. containing his observations on France, Italy and Turkey and Europe..., 1744) he declares that his intention was to broaden his knowledge, debunk the prejudices stemming from a conservative education and, last but not least, satisfy his own natural curiosity.
