Clément Augustin-Jean-Charles [ 1717 - 1804 ]

Initially intended for a career in the church, Augustine-Jean-Charles Clement (Créteil, 1717-Livry, 1804), was quickly expelled following serious conflicts with the religious authorities. It was this abrupt shift in perspective that inspired him to start traveling. He was very active politically, openly expressing his convictions in matters of belief and religion. For this reason he was frequently embroiled in controversy, to the point of being placed under arrest. Settling in Paris, he devoted himself almost exclusively to the reestablishment of faith, a question on which he put forward important considerations in his writing Principes de l'unité du culte. The account of his journeys to Italy and Spain (Journal de correspondance et voyages d'Italie et d'Espagne pour la Paix de l'Eglise, 1802) is characterized by an exposure of all the religious intrigues of the time, especially those involving the Jansenists, although tempered with splendid descriptions of the landscape.
