Agents of the Tour
Travelers' memories were necessarily influenced by the material conditions of the journey, the means of transport used and the likableness and honesty, or alternatively the craftiness and inconsiderateness of the people they had to deal with.
The world that turned around the tour was in fact filled with a great variety of figures, to whom travelers were more or less well disposed. They often had a suspicious and wary attitude, because of the money involved, but were also capable of showing gratitude when the resourcefulness and initiative of intermediaries improved the conditions of the journey.
The travel industry was a business , then as now, and the services on offer were extremely varied, especially along the routes that were soon to become the principal arteries of the journey through Italy.
