Caraccioli Louis Antoine [ 1719 - 1803 ]

Marquis Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1723-1803) traveled a great deal in Italy, establishing an intense relationship with Carlo della Torre Rezzonico, Pope Clement XIII. It was partly this important friendship that prompted him to write the rich and magnificent accounts of his tours, extremely meticulous and filled with oddities. He was also a prolific writer of poetry, novels, history and biography. Among his more important works are the Lettres intéressantes du pape Clément XIV. In addition to Italy he visited Poland, in the guise of tutor of the children of Prince Rewski. Returning to France, he settled in Paris. The last years of his life were much less adventurous and beset by grave financial difficulties.
